What is the purpose of this site?

What, indeed. If I'm brutally honest with myself then this site exists for no other reason than I felt that I should have one.

However, now that I do have one I have come up with all sorts of other reasons:

  • Home for Honor's Hand.
  • Software Archive.
  • Q&A Knowledgebase.
  • Learn more web languages.
  • Some info about me.
  • Anything else that comes up.

Honor's Hand

Honor's Hand is an idea for a role-playing game that has been knocking around the inside of my skull for some time. The biggest problem it had was that I was never in one place long to give it a good run.

Solution? Set it up online and have people play it there.

Software Archive

Over the past few years I have written quite a number programs. For quite some time I have wanted to make most of my personally developed programs available (either as freeware or shareware) to the net community. I also felt that the software should have a home, rather than be an isolated posting on a software archive somewhere - if only to provide a support infrastructure for the programs.

So they are here, in a sub-web on this site.

Q&A Knowledgebase

I am often asked questions about computing and software development. Occasionally I get asked the same question from several different sources (if I had a dollar for every time I have been asked: "What's a cookie?"...).

So I have decided to create a knowledgebase. Initially this will hold my answers to various computing questions I have been asked recently. With any luck it will grow into some kind of searchable brain dump on all things tech. We will see.

Learn more Web languages

As the old saying goes: "You don't know it until you've done it".

I already know 11 computer languages and 14 macro languages and I thought putting up this site would be a great way to add JavaScript, PHP, CGI, SSI, Perl, and of course HTML to the list.

So far it seems to be working.

Info about me

The about me section was the section I spent the most time deciding whether or not to include on the site. I have quite strong feelings on the subjects of privacy and free speech and the technologies that help protect them (for example: encryption). The thought of intentionally making all sorts of personal information public was more than a little concerning.

However, some information seemed to be in order so that the site wouldn't seem too sterile, and various friends and family members had indicated that they wanted something that kept them somewhat abreast of my movements.

So I came to a compromise with myself: I have revealed as much information as I might normally reveal to a work colleague in the first few days after starting a new job.

It will be interesting to see how well this works.
