On NOT choosing Windows Vista

Whatever you may think of Windows Vista there are two things you do have to give it:
  1. It is very pretty
  2. It really does advance the Windows platform
However it also, in my opinion at least, contains quite a few downsides which one of these days I might even get around to detailing, but they include: licensing, security, DRM, process and memory management, user permissions, etc. In any case, I have decided that despite being a owner/user of Windows for more years than I care to count Windows XP will probably be the last version of Windows I will own. Thats right, I have decided to not move to Vista. I am going to move to Apple Macintosh (probably dual booting into XP) for new hardware and Linux for my existing hardware. I fully expect that I will wind up being a user of the platform anyway - my employer is bound to adopt it at some point - but I am choosing to not adopt it on my personal equipment.

Vista

Hmm, my opinion differs. I haven't tried Vista yet, but I'm not sure that an operating system is something to get too precious about. I think it comes down to how familar one is with the operating system that is used. I've been using Windows for years and am very familar with its functionality, so can't see myself changing to something away from Vista.

That said, I won my copy of Windows XP, and I am getting a free upgrade to Vista because I was lucky enough to buy a laptop at the right time. Perhaps my opinion would be different if I had to pay for these things, but I suspect that having played with Ubuntu for the last few weeks that I wouldn't be rushing to a cheaper alternative. The $$$ for Vista might be worth it.

As for DRM / HDCP I haven't really had a problem in the past and can't see an issue in the future. Security permissions are rumoured to be a pain, and I'll be turning them off.

But good on you for making a choice away from Windows. I like the ease of use ideal that people rave about with Apple.

Precious... my precious

Agreed, when all is said and done it is just another operating system - and all the traditional areas of OS differences have pretty much fallen away now. And, despite having posted the above, I can't stand the "OS 'A' is better then OS 'B'" tek-wank that I occasionally hear (which is main reason I didn't go off detail my reasons).

No, I was just announcing a personal decision.

Good to hear from you though.
