Merits are positive character elements that can affect the game, merits cost freebie points. For example: you could buy the +3pt merit "Luck" - which makes you character luckier than normal. The effect of "Luck" is that sometimes you can reroll a botch - very handy. However, it just cost you three freebie points during character creation.
