Are Role-playing Games Dangerous?

No. Not in my opinion, and not in the opinion of a number of experts [see references], but unfortunately not everyone agrees with me.

PBEM's & Other Game Types

Role-playing games into a number of categories, as follows:

What is a role-playing game?

I define a role playing game as a game played by a group of people (4 - 8 is common) who invent a set of fictional characters and then direct the actions of those characters in a fictional setting. The setting has a number of rules (sometimes a large number), which set the parameters for player and setting interaction. The setting is normally chosen and controlled by one of the players (often called the game master or storyteller).

How are role-playing games played?

Role-playing games are normally played in the sitting position. Almost always this means comfortable chairs with reasonable amounts of soft drink (soda), pizza, candy, or some other snack food close by.

A typical "game session" lasts approximately six hours, but there is no upper limit to the total length of the game. Most games last several months, some games go on for years.
