Auriga: a 60fps, 720p, AMV

Another first for Nostromo, he has (to my knowledge) created the first 60 fps AMV. He used special software to interpolate extra frames into the Anime to make it effective.

God it's smooth. It might as well be an advert for HD.

24 fps may be the minimum rate for smooth images (in a medium that produces motion blur), but it is clear that the eye can keep up with higher rates.

Probably much higher.

The Watch for a Steam Punk Generation

A couple of my friends are into steam punk, and I have just seen what I am sure they would regard as a wonderful birthday or Christmas present: HD3 Complication's Bi-Axial.

Is the Orphan Works Act back?

It looks like the Orphan Works Act might be making a comeback.

For those that don't remember the last time (it was defeated in the US Congress back in 2006 thanks to a large body of opposition from artists, photographers, designers, etc.), the act was to amend copyright law such that any work not officially registered would become excluded from most copyright protections.

Zooming into a quark from 10 million light years out

The last link in my "I should really be doing something else" set of Space links, is a series of zoom-ins starting with a view of the Milky Way from about 10 million light years out from Earth and winding up with a close-up of a few quarks that happen to be loitering in a carbon atom in a tree leaf.

Please do not adjust your consciousness.

Novel data visualisation diagram

The New York Times often has good election coverage, and the current race to pick a US presidential candidate is no exception. One of the gems on their web site uses an interesting data visualisation technique to produce a variant of a network diagram. The result is fascinating:

New York Magazine on Vidding

Seems to be a week for them... Here is an interview in New York Magazine with the Vid editor Luminosity (a Vid is like an AMV but with live action video).

BTW, if you haven't seen any of Luminosity's work go check it out, she's very good.

The Japan Times on AMVs and Remix Culture

I see that the Japan Times has run a story on AMVs and Remix Culture - both topics that have been near and dear to my heart for a number of years.

It is quite a good article.

It's not gPhone, it's Android

It is big news of course, and everyone is talking about it, so there probably isn't too much to add. Except I will point out that:

There are other Linux handsets on the way

I think more competition in the handset market (even the Linux handset market) will probably be a good thing (some people think Google should have joined one of the other efforts)

While a number of handset manufactures have not joined (they are generally part of another group already), Nokia has said that they are considering joining after all.
